Opossum

In New York City and New Jersey, the most common opossum species is the Virginia opossum. Virginia opossums are the only species of opossum native to North America and are widely distributed throughout the eastern United States, including urban and suburban areas.Virginia opossums are well-adapted to a variety of habitats, including forests, fields, marshes, and residential neighborhoods. They are known for their distinctive appearance, with grayish-white fur, long hairless tails, and pointed faces. Opossums are nocturnal animals, meaning they are most active at night, and are omnivorous, feeding on a diet that includes insects, fruits, vegetables, small mammals, and carrion. While Virginia opossums are generally shy and non-aggressive animals, they are adaptable and can sometimes be found living in close proximity to humans. They are known for their ability to adapt to urban environments, where they may take up residence in attics, crawl spaces, or under decks and porches. Signs of opossum activity or potential infestation may include disturbed trash or pet food containers and nesting materials. Overall, while opossums may occasionally cause minor issues or nuisances around homes and yards, they are generally not considered significant pests in terms of property damage.

If you're experiencing issues with opossums causing problems on your property, we will:

  • assess the extent of the opossum infestation, including the population size, activity areas, and factors contributing to the problem.

  • recommend habitat modifications to make the area less attractive to opossums.

  • use repellents or deterrents to discourage opossums from entering certain areas. These could include chemical repellents, physical barriers, or visual deterrents.

  • employ trapping methods to capture and remove opossums from the area. Trapping should be done in accordance with local regulations and guidelines to ensure the humane treatment of the animals.

  • recommend excluding opossums from specific areas by installing barriers or modifying structures to prevent access.

It's important to approach opossum infestations with care and consideration for the welfare of the animals and the broader ecosystem. At EZ WIldlife Management, our wildlife professionals have the knowledge and experience to implement control measures effectively and responsibly while minimizing harm to both opossums and the environment.
