ANTS
Over 700 ant species exist in the U.S., but around 25 are common home invaders. The most common species of ants found in New York and New Jersey are carpenter ants, odorous house ant, and pavement ants. Ants live in colonies with workers and a queen, feeding on various foods, especially sweets. Identifying ants is easy due to their three body parts and antennae, though they vary in size and color, often referred to as small or large, brown or black. Ants are commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms inside homes, drawn by food and moisture. Despite their small size, they can contaminate food and cause property damage. Their colonies can spread quickly if not controlled. Furthermore, it is critical to observe for warning signs of an ant infestation. Signs of ant infestations may include visible ant trails, the presence of ant nests, damaged wood structures, property/ garden damage, and food contamination.
To prevent and treat ant infestations, it is best to:
Seal entry points and cracks with caulking or other suitable materials to prevent ants from re-entering the structure.
Maintain cleanliness by eliminating food sources, sealing cracks and crevices, and removing standing water that may attract ants.
Apply appropriate insecticides, baits, or residual sprays to areas where ants are active, such as trails, nesting sites, and entry points
Set up ant baits containing slow-acting insecticides that ants will carry back to the colony, effectively eliminating the entire population, including the queen.
Remove old landscape materials and excess vegetation to minimize nesting sites.
Fix leaks and use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture.
